On April 22, the Illinois Junior Academy of Science (IJAS) brought back their in-person state competition for all 12 regions in Illinois this year. A total of 152 awards from 35 member schools were given during the paper and project poster sessions, which represented 14 categories of research. The state competitors advanced from their Regional Fair held on March 5 at various locations throughout the state. IMSA had two state qualifiers this year: senior Siddharth Tiwari and junior Cole Plepel. Both students were recognized with a Gold Level Certificate for their research papers.

Siddharth Tiwari has been in SIR for two years, working under the direction of Dr. Apkar Vania Apkarian from Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. Siddharth presented his health sciences paper on the relationship between pain variability and relief in randomized clinical trials. He also received a special top ten award in the senior division.

Cole Plepel presented his mathematics paper titled Approximating the Row-Wise Weighted Total Least Squares Regression Solution. Cole has been mentored this past year by Dr. Evan Glazer, President of IMSA, with plans to continue his research next year.
