SIR Students Present at ABRCMS Symposium for Emerging Scientists

April 26, 2022

The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) invited high school, community college, and first-year undergraduate students to apply for a unique opportunity at the ePoster Spring Symposium for Emerging Scientists to enhance their scientific skills by sharing their research. This ABRCMS Symposium for Emerging Scientists is a new opportunity for future scientists to join the ABRCMS community and submit abstracts in one of the 12 ABRCMS disciplines. The top presentations from each of the 12 ABRCMS disciplines will present their research live to a virtual audience on April 26, 2022.

Five SIR students represented IMSA. Junior Kenith Taukolo presented research with a project in immunology titled The Impact of CPSF6 on the Innate Immune Response to HIV Infection. Juniors Sachleen Tateja and Irene Liu showcased their computational and systems biology projects. Sachleen presented An Evaluation of Variant Annotation Tools – Alamut Batch, ENSEMBLVariant Effect Predictor (VEP), and ANNOVAR – for Clinical Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) based Genetic Testing. While Irene presented Using Machine Learning to Recognize CRS in Patients. Junior Bhavya Vegesna presented a project in cancer biology titled JAG1 Role in the Extravasation of Metastasized TNBC. Senior Hannah Johnson showcased a chemistry project titled Fragment-based drug discovery and synthesis of SARS-CoV-2 therapeutics.
