Bio:
Dr. Patrick Buck is a history instructor at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. He earned a B.A. with Honors from Albion College in 2015, and earned a Ph.D. in history from Michigan State University in 2022. He also studied Chinese at Beijing Normal University, National Tsing Hua University, and Middlebury College. From 2018 to 2021, Dr. Buck conducted archival research in Hong Kong, mainland China, and Taiwan. In 2021, he was a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellow in Taiwan. Dr. Buck is an intellectual and cultural historian of modern China. His research explores the influence and usage of classical Chinese thought in modern China’s intellectual history. His dissertation, The Great Chinese Cultural Debate: Revolution and Renaissance Across the Taiwan Strait, 1973-1976, is an intellectual and cultural history of the Criticize Lin Biao Criticize Confucius Campaign in the People’s Republic of China (mainland) and the Chinese Cultural Renaissance Campaign in the Republic of China (Taiwan). He is currently working on a monograph. His research interests also include the histories of Confucianism, communism, and nationalism across the Sinophone world. At IMSA, Dr. Buck teaches the courses Ancient World Religion and Philosophy, Revolutions, and the World in the Twentieth Century. He has taught courses before on Modern China, Modern Japan, the History of Chinese Political Thought, The Chinese Cultural Revolution, and Pre-Modern World History.
