The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy has moved beyond the walls of its internationally recognized Aurora, IL, campus to expand science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs and services across Southern Illinois. IMSA’s Belleville office offers STEM enrichment programs for area students, and professional development programs for educators.
Funshops are 2-hour, hands-on, fun-filled, STEM activities for students in grades 3-6. They are written by our fabulous IMSA curriculum writing team to capture your child’s natural curiosity and mimic the enterprise of doing real science.

Electromagnetism is one of the four fundamental forces of physics in our universe and in this FunShop, our arcade engineers will learn how to harness this force to create arcade games! Students will first explore the nature of magnetic materials via our Ultimate Magnet Olympics! They will then apply this knowledge towards creating irresistible magnetic arcade games that will attract everyone to come play!
Grades 5 & 6
How does engineering and science apply to a simple game of skee-ball? With all the technology taking over the gaming industry, our dedicated Arcade Engineers need to SAVE Skee-ball, a classic and super fun arcade game!! Kids will experience the engineering design process and explore physics principles as they create their own game of skee-ball!! Come have a BALL and put your own SPIN on how the game is built and played!

BioSleuths (rising 3rd and 4th graders)
Survival of the fittest! Come explore how plants and insects survive in a world dominated by humans. Bring an observant eye and ear as we investigate unique interactions between living organisms. Dissect a grasshopper and flower, test how ants respond to stimuli, create an insect soundscape, and more! The hands-on explorations, inquiry-based activities, and modeling will leave students buzzing with excitement!
E2 : Engineering Explorations (rising 5th and 6th graders)
Design, tinker, build, test—then do it again! Working in teams, participants will engage in hands-on activities as they explore the engineering design process through electrical, chemical, and biomedical engineering. Students will design, build, and race boats, make their own electrified board games, and create models of heart valves and lungs. Participants also get to test the principles of force and motion through a week-long Rube Goldberg project culminating in a competition.
Gold Medal STEM (rising 7th and 8th graders)
Can’t make it to Tokyo this summer? Come join us in this camp to discover how STEM concepts can be applied applied to a variety of sports and help Olympians medal in their events. How does a diver minimize their splash and maximize their score? How is sports equipment made to accommodate maximal forces? The underlying STEM principles for the sports you know and love will be investigated as participants build and race a robotic swimmer, customize their own bow and arrows, and test cycling gears!
