What is Allies?

Allies is a youth development service-learning program in which students learn STEM content by serving others.  It prepares high school students to deliver inquiry-based, hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics activities (STEM) to younger students. Allies learn 21st century workforce readiness skills, including best practice collaboration, critical thinking, leadership and communication skills.

IMSA's Allies utilizes the “Kids Teaching Kids” model that was established over a decade ago at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA). As a teaching and learning laboratory for imagination and inquiry, IMSA has incubated the Allies program to maturity and has expanded the program to include students outside of the Aurora campus, giving the same opportunities to students in Chicago.

Currently there are three locations for the IMSA Allies Program; the IMSA Aurora Campus, as well as two programs facilitated in Chicago. The locations in Chicago include the Chicago Mathematics and Science Academy (CMSA) and the Perspectives Mathematics and Science Academy-a group of students from four of the high schools in the Perspectives Charter Schools network.
